Spermidine enhances autophagy, meaning it triggers the cell cleaning process within the body. Since autophagy has a life-extending effect on the body, it has been observed that a diet with high spermidine content, at least 80 µmol (micromoles) spermidine per day, prolongs life. Spermidine was first discovered in male semen in the 1970s, hence the substance was named spermidine. Spermidine is a so-called polyamine, i.e., a compound made of amino acids. Scientists from Graz found in the early 2000s that spermidine has a life-extending effect. Spermidine is closely related to cell growth. The spermidine content in the organism increases with an acceleration of metabolism. When metabolism slows down, the production of spermidine decreases. As one gets older, the concentration of endogenous spermidine drops.

Natural circumstances that increase the amount of endogenous spermidine include growth, pregnancy, and the repair of muscle cells after intense physical exertion. Also, the regeneration of red blood cells after blood loss/anemia or after prolonged high-altitude stays naturally increases the spermidine concentration.
